Setting goals are important. You've heard that a thousand times so I won't bore you with more on that. However, are you accomplishing the goals you are setting? Often times goals are set but not followed through with and given up on.
Why not set yourself up for success when setting goals?
Here are 4 steps that you can take to make it more likely that you will hit your goals.
1. Less is More
Trying to set and hit 15 goals for a year is simply going to get you running around in circles and tripping over yourself. Focusing on 3-5 goals for the year is much more attainable. When everything is important - nothing is important.
2. Write it Down
Get your notebook (or laptop) out and actually write down your goals. This can be for a company, department, or you own individual goals. Having your goals kept in front of you (whether on your desk or open on your desktop) will help be a near constant reminder. The saying "out of sight out of mind" can be taken two ways.
3. SMART
Don't do yourself a disservice and write a vague or generic goal like "grow our company". What does that even mean? Are you growing your revenue? Number of employees? Number of units sold? Number of products offered? Make sue you're writing SMART goals so you know what success looks like. Specific. Measurable. Attainable. Realistic. Timely
4. Break it up
You can set daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or annual goals (and 148 other kinds of goal timeframes) but for this purpose let's use annual goals. When setting annual goals it's important that you don't just set it and forget it. Setting 90 day priorities for these goals helps break them up into bite sized pieces. You can look at these as milestones. A million dollar sales goal for the year seems more daunting than hitting $250,000 in sales for the next quarter.
